Sayyiduna Abdullaah Ibne Amr Ibn Aas
رضى الله تعالى عنه
narrates:
Verily
رسول الله صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم
said:

The most beloved Salaah to ALLAH TA’ALA, is the Salaah of Hazrat Dawood Alayhis salaam , and the most beloved fast to ALLAH TA’ALA, is the fast of Hazrat Dawood Alayhis salaam
He used to sleep for half the night, remain in worship for one third of it, and sleep for one sixth of it
He used to fast on one day and not fast on the next

(Bukhari/Muslim)

Hazrat Dawood Alayhis salaam used to sleep for two thirds of the night and then worship for the remainder.
This is regarded the best, because when a person rests sufficiently, then he will be able to worship ALLAH TA’ALA with greater enthusiasm and fervour.
Fasting on alternative days entails greater sacrifice, since the body does not become accustomed to fasting. It is also beneficial for the physical body and general health.
